Fire Sanding & Coloring

Michael Kehs of the NJ Woodturners gave a demo on what he calls Fire Sanding and Coloring via Zoom on Tuesday July 14.  This decorative process entails charring the wood of a turned object with a torch then wire brushing, polishing and finally adding a pop of color with guilders/accent paste.  The resulting contrast of color against blackened grain is stunning.  Michael uses this technique to not only add interest to plain or ordinary woods like poplar, ash and pine but also applies it to woods recognized for their natural beauty – like burls – with spectacular results.
