Sam Angelo Embellishing Wood Demo

The NJ Woodturners hosted a demo by Sam Angelo (a.k.a. WyomingWoodturner) on enhancing wood through texturing and coloring on July 27, 2020 via Zoom.  Sam showed how the use of not only various commercial texturing tools but also objects that one might not consider — like screw bits, leather working tools and spur drives hammered into wood — can yield interesting textures.  Sam also showed how different textures can be achieved by burning the wood and by spinning an object in reverse and on multiple axes on the lathe.

Sam demonstrated coloring with markers, airbrushed stains, guilder’s paste and metal reactive paints — paints that contain metal powder and react to a sprayed on solution.  He also showed how spectacular patterns could be achieved by coloring the inside of thin walled hollow forms so the colors bleed through.
